Lamborghini's financial difficulties saw series production move to Baur, using bodywork designed by Giugiaro's ItalDesign, while BMW's naturally-aspirated straight-six went on to form the basis of the original M5's engine.
The M1 also underpinned the Procar Championship, a one-make support series run alongside Formula 1 races in 1979 and 1980.
